For more than 2,500 years, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) have been used to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, as well as to improve general health. Rigorous clinical trials have confirmed that acupuncture is an especially effective treatment for pain. The benefits of acupuncture extend to a wide variety of conditions from the mental/emotional realm to the physical body and internal organ function.
The traditional explanation for acupuncture’s effectiveness is that it modifies and balances the flow of energy (known as “Qi” or “Chi”) throughout the body. Gentle electric stimulation, or other TCM modalities, such as moxa, cupping, gua-sha and/or tui-na may be used in addition to acupuncture to enhance the treatment.
After the initial consultation and assessment, the needles are placed in very specific locations. Acute symptoms may only require two to four treatments. It is common for chronic cases, to have as many as 12 or more treatments, usually over a course of eight to 10 weeks for benefit. Regular visits may be suggested as preventive measures to decrease stress, improve energy or boost immunity.
Additional recommendations are commonly provided as a part of an individualized treatment plan, these may include: herbal medicines, specific exercises, stress reduction practices, as well as dietary and lifestyle recommendations.
